This is an ideal book for those who like to grow, buy and of course use herbs in their cooking. Arabella Boxer has listed out herbs and spices giving a brief description and history for each one as well as their culinary and medicinal uses. To illustrate their use in cooking she has included over 100 pages of recipes some examples are listed below.

On page 127 Braised Pheasant with Lovage a nice looking dish using lovage which rarely gets mentioned in recipes. When we were Hoteliers we used to introduce our clients to Brandy and Lovage a really nice and warming after dinner drink, especially in front of a blazing log fire in the depths of a West Country winter.
