This is a long awaited book from probably the best known Japanese chef in the Western Hemisphere, with some 13 restaurants in the U.S.A, Europe and Japan. He has become a cult figure both with fellow chefs and many celebrities. There is a brief biography at the beginning of the book, which leaves you wanting to know more about Nobu the man.

As its title suggests this book contains many recipes from the ever popular Japanese street cafes. Although they have gained a foothold the American fast food industry has yet to manage to kill of this uniquely Japanese source of food.

If you like Japanese food, this book, which goes back to the basics from which most modern cuisine in Japan comes from, is the one for you.

Below are listed some of the recipe ideas from this book.

Ganmodoki (Fried Tofu Balls) see page 30.

Tempura Moriwase (Assorted Tempura) see page 47, this is a fish dish and vegetables fried in a lumpy batter.

Buta no Shoga-miso Mushi-yaki (Pork Steak steam roasted with Ginger Miso) this is a dish to which you add sake.

Sake Donburi (Salmon and Egg Rice Bowl) another dish with sake plus rice and salmon the secret is in the rest of the ingredients and the cooking method.

A confession your reviewer does not really like fish and certainly could not get to grips with raw fish hence the selection of recipes listed above.

However he does remember many years ago hearing his mother enquire after his fathers health, as she kept hearing him going in and out of the toilet, "I am alright" he replied, "so why do you keep flushing the toilet" she asked, "to get rid of the rice" he replied! It turned out that being an avid wine maker he had decided to make Sake and he was trying to get rid of buckets full of rice.
